Newfoundland Shortlisted for 2013 IIHF World Women's Hockey Championship...

Some excellent news!! St. John's has the opportunity to host the 2013 IIHF World Women's Hockey Championship. After a lot of hard work and collaboration with several key partners, Destination St. John's had submitted a bid to Hockey Canada for review. Three locations, including St. John's, have been shortlisted with a formal presentation to be held in Calgary on April 6. It's a great opportunity for St. John's to once again host a world class hockey event. Just this past November the Women's Four Nation's Cup was held in Newfoundland and we now boast the record for attendence at this event. Our province is fast becoming recognized as the place to go, whether it is for a conference, meeting, AGM, incentive travel or a major sporting event.

The City of St. John’s will be celebrating Tourism Awareness Week 2011 by honouring the very best in the tourism business at its 20th Annual Tourism Awards Ceremony in June.

Nominations are now being accepted for the following annual awards:

Legend Award

This award is presented annually to the individual or group who has made significant contributions to the enhancement of tourism in St. John’s through:

· reinforcing and promoting our built and cultural heritage unique to the City

· increasing the profile of the City provincially, regionally, nationally, or internationally

· enhancing the environmental health of the City

Event of the Year Award

This award is presented annually to the group or organization who, through the production of an event, best exemplifies the spirit of St. John’s and generates tourism visitation for the St. John’s region. The event must have occurred in the past year and should have:

· celebrated traditions unique to the City

· effectively marketed the City through the event

· celebrated the culture of the City and/or

· promoted the history/heritage of the City

Signal Award

This award is presented annually to the individual, group or company who has made a significant contribution to the evolution and sustainability of the cruise ship industry in St. John’s. The nominee should have:

· been recognized as a true ambassador for the City of St. John’s

· provided profile to the celebrated traditions, culture and unique heritage of the City

· contributed to the profile of St. John’s through effective marketing and promotional activities

· demonstrated a continued commitment to provision of quality service

Victoria Wagon Award

This award is prresented annually to a taxi driver who best exemplifies the spirit of exceptional customer service.

Destination St. John’s Award of Distinction

Attracting meetings/conferences/events is very competitive and often takes significant commitment and effort of local groups or individuals to win the bid to host. The Destination St. John’s Award of Distinction therefore recognizes the work of a local planning committee or individual who was instrumental in bringing the meeting/conference/event to St. John’s.

· The work of the committee or individual will have been judged as prominent in the decision to choose St. John’s as the location for the meeting/conference/event.

· The meeting/conference/event must be regional, national or international and bring substantial economic

benefit to the area by way of overnight accommodation nights sold.

· Guest programs and pre and post experiences should be offered to delegates as part of the

meeting/conference/event.

· The profile of St. John’s, the region and the province should be heightened by hosting the meeting/conference/event.

Newfoundland and Labrador a Popular Destination of Choice in 2010...

The 2010 tourism industry in our province experienced another exceptional year! Local hoteliers reported a 6.8% increase in rooms sold in 2010, to 608,890 room nights up from 570,190 room nights sold during the same time period in 2009. Meanwhile, the average occupancy rate climbed by $2.88 (+2.3%) during the same time period. A strong indication that our destination is proving to be "the place to go' whether for business or pleasure.

To compliment DSJ's successful year, the St. John's International Airport Authority reached a milestone experiencing over 1.3 million passengers boarding or deplaning in 2010 with airline passenger movements showing an increase of 7.7% or 94,769 passengers over 2009. A remarkable accomplishment for our airport!
The cruise industry also had a very successful year hosting 20 cruise ships in 2010, a significant increase from the 11 visits last year. 19,025 visitors (13,013 passengers and 6,012 crew) "came ashore", a 74.3% increase over the 10,917 visitors in 2009. A wonderful economic benefit for the City of St. John's and surrounds.

The St. John's Board of Trade held their 18th Annual "Business Excellence Awards" today at the St. John's Convention Centre. Destination St. John's congratulates four of its members on their tremendous accomplishments.

The Holiday Inn were the big winners with two awards - Customer Service and Reliability and the prestigious Business Excellence Award. The Newfoundland Chocolate Company received the New Start-Up Award, for Contribution to Community and Community Service (under 50 employees) Coast 101 was given the honour, and the Newfoundland Liquor Corporation were recognized for Marketing and Promotional Achievements.

Destination St. John's CEO, Keith Healey Passes Away...

Mark McCarthy, Chair of Destination St. John's, issues the following statement on the passing of Destination St. John's CEO Keith Healey:
"It is with a very heavy heart that I mourn the sudden passing of the CEO of our organization and my friend Keith Healey.
A graduate of Memorial University of Newfoundland and a Chartered Accountant, Keith held a variety of senior positions within the government of Newfoundland and Labrador over 30 years including serving as the assistant deputy minister with Works, Services and Transportation; Tourism, Culture and Recreation; Industry, Trade and Technology; and Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. Keith also served as the province's comptroller general.

In 2008 Destination St. John's was fortunate to have Keith accept its CEO position. Keith proved himself to be an excellent senior manager who oversaw our operations and led DSJ through a period of continued and impressive growth. His passion for the province, his vision for the destination and his steady hand were much appreciated by the Board and the staff of DSJ.

His leadership was valued by other organizations as well. He served on many boards and committees throughout his career including most recently a position on the Board of the St. John's Board of Trade.

Keith had embraced other interests outside of his professional life. He was an active and much loved member of the Skal St. John's Club. He was an avid photographer whose work was often used within DSJ. He travelled extensively outside and inside the province during his leisure time and often discussed these adventures with his colleagues.

Above all he was a loving husband to his wife Charlotte, and a devoted father to his two sons Chad and Karl. On behalf of the Board and staff of Destination St. John's I extend our heartfelt condolences to Keith's family and friends. All of us were privileged to have worked with him and enjoyed him during our time together.

I have been truly blessed to have counted him among my friends in this life."

2010 Sony Cup Under 18 Male and Female Soccer Championships Start Wednesday...

Nine Newfoundland and Labrador teams are scheduled to compete in national soccer championships between October 6th and October 11th as hosted by the cities of Mount Pearl and St. John's. There will be 22 soccer clubs from across the country represented in these champtionships highlighting the talents of many young players.

A benefit concert "WE STAND ON GUARD" will be held Tuesday, October 19th at Mile One Centre in St. John's featuring many prominent artists like Hey Rosetta!, Tara Oram, Damhnait Doyle, Kim Stockwood, Amelia Curran, Shanneyganock, Billy and the Bruisers, The Novak and The Once with more expected to be confirmed.

All funds raised will remain in Newfoundland and Labrador for distribution by the Red Cross to help rebuild the many communities affected by the hurricane.

The m/s Amadea will visit from 8:00am - 5:00pm while the Prince Albert 11 will be in port from 7:30am - 12:00am - a shorter stay but enough time for passengers to "get a feel" for the historic City of Legends. Mile One Centre will host a family fun show for all ages as the President's Choice SuperDogs Show perform Saturday, October 23rd, 2010. From "The Bow Wows of Broadway" to "Hollywoof", "Starwoofs", "The Wizard of Paws", "Hairy Pawter," "El Festiva," and "Woof, Rock 'N Roll". Every show is a canine cross between a Broadway hit and a major sporting event. Their latest tour showcases the cast's talents in "BFF-LOL-WOW". Today marks the end of Targa Newfoundland's annual race here in the province. Competitors will start the day off at Little Bay East and make their way through the communities of Harbour Mile, Jacques Fontaine, Carbonear, Harbour Grace and Brigus. Drop down to George Street for the final drive through on George Street at 5:30pm and the awards ceremony at the Keg on the Harbour Front at 6:00pm. It has been an exciting few days of competition and a great opportunity for many of our communities to to experience the "thrill of the race". Just a couple more days and the 9th Annual Targa Newfoundland begins with a 2200 kilometre course

through various communities in Eastern and Central Newfoundland with its beautiful scenery and natural beauty you just won't see anywhere!

The team is entered in the very competitive Grand Touring competition.

The Port of St. John's Will be Very Active Over the Next Couple of Days...

The City of St. John's will welcome not one, but three cruise ships over the next two days!

On Sept 8th, the largest of the three, the "AIDAluna" will arrive with 2,050 passengers on board. The ship will arrive at 1:00pm and depart at 7:00pm. Next, on the same day, we welcome 120 passengers aboard the "Spirit of the Oceanus".

And,...the very next day, the cruise ship "Silver Whisper" will arrive in our port with 382 passengers on board for a scheduled visit from port 8:00am until 6:00pm.

The 2013 World Ball Hockey Championships are coming to St. John's!!

Destination St. John’s is pleased to announce that St. John’s will be the host city for the 2013 World Ball Hockey Championships. The bid was awarded this morning at the Delta Hotel in St. John’s as part of the Canadian Ball Hockey Championships which is taking place in the city now.

Keith Healey, CEO of Destination St. John’s says, “We were pleased to work closely with the local bid committee headed by Paul Barron to put together the winning proposal to host this major world tournament. Partnerships between local associations, venue operators and DSJ are proving to be a force to be reckoned with in attracting national and international events. Just as in the game itself, strong team work produces results in event attraction. “

The championships will be held in early June 2013 and will go on for 10 days. Venues in St. John’s, Mount Pearl and Torbay will be used for the games. It is anticipated that the event will attract almost 900 players, coaches and officials from 24 countries.

A nationally recognized Sport Tourism Economic impact Assessment Model (STEAM) developed by the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance pegs the value of this tournament to the region at over $2M.

Paul Barron, local host committee chair added, “The Newfoundland & Labrador Ball Hockey Association is delighted to be the host of the 2013 ISBHF World Ball Hockey Championships. In 2008 we hosted the World Junior Ball Hockey Championships which was a tremendous success. Indeed we were told it was “the best organized Junior World Championship ever”. We have also hosted the Canadian Nationals six times. We look forward to building on these successes and making this the best world championship ever.”

Hockey Excitement Begins with the National Junior Team Development Camp!

St. John's International Airport Records Passenger Record ..

The busiest June on record! ...great news for the St. John's International Airport...and indeed the Province as over 125,000 passengers passed through the gates of the St. John's terminal.

This represents an increase of more than 11 percent over June 2009 and a continuance of rates well above the national average. To top that off, St. John’s International Airport was one of only six airports in Canada that experienced an increase in passenger traffic in 2009. And as reported by the St. John's Airport Authority the first six months of 2010 passenger traffic numbers are up 8.5 per cent compared to 2009.

As quoted in the July 30th edition of The Telegram: “The continued growth in passenger traffic and its resiliency through the global recession clearly reflects the strength of our local economy,” Keith Collins, president and CEO of the St. John’s International Airport Authority, said in a press release.

“The fact that we live in a vibrant and growing city that is attractive to tourists and has an expanding oil industry has enabled us to be successful in recruiting new airlines to the region and in encouraging existing airlines to expand their route network.”

This is certainly a reflection on the unique appeal of Newfoundland and Labrador. From the leisure traveller to the Meeting, Convention and Event markets, many visitors have had the opportunity to experience the beauty of our province, our culture rich in history and the warmth of our people. A wonderful accomplishment indeed!

The Hamilton Bulldogs Pre-Season Game Set for Mile One...

A big treat for hockey fans! The AHL Hamilton Bulldogs are set to play a pre-season game at Mile One Centre against the Binghamton Senators (AHL affiliate of the Ottawa Senators) at 2pm on Sunday, October 3rd. This is the last of three games the Bulldogs will play for the Newfoundland portion of their pre-season training camp. Look for games September 30th at the Pepsi Centre in Corner Brook and Saturday, October 2nd at the Joe Byrne Arena in Grand Falls. Newfoundland Hospitality Makes a Difference...

We received an email from an Ottawa couple who visited our province recently and got a personal tase of true Newfoundland hospitality that made a huge impact on their visit. Just one more reason why our destination is one of a kind.

..."My husband and I have been touring this beautiful province for almost a month. We were having a wonderful time and camped in so many different places. We were looking forward to our 4 nights in St. John's. We stayed in Pippy Park and couldn't get over such beauty in the centre of the city. Unfortunately, our impression was shattered. Early on the morning of Monday, July 19, (between 1 and 4 am) someone came and smashed the window of our car and plucked out my husband's camera which was under his coat in the back seat. We did not hear a thing (nor did our 3 dogs) until we were awakened by security rapping on our door. We felt sick. Not only did we have to deal with replacing the window, we had lost all the photos we had accumulated on our journey. They cannot be replaced. Early Monday morning, we headed off to the insurance and then on to see Steve Bishop, the manager of Speedy Glass at 11 Pippy Place. He told us he would have to order the glass from Montreal and that he should be able to get it by Wed. (we were planning to leave St. John's on Wed. morning). He immediately put our vulnerable car inside his garage; then he gave us directions to a car rental outlet which we could reach by foot. We set off; there was no car to be had; we went to another spot; again, no cars available. Discouraged, we returned to Speedy to see if Steve had any ideas. He called 3 more places for us and finally located a car that would be available later in the afternoon. Then he called a taxi (Sean at Newfound Cabs) and gave us a chit to pay for our return to Pippy Park. Sean, too, was very kind and offered to help in any way he could. Today, shortly after noon, we called to hear that our car was ready! Our experience was very upsetting, but Steve not only performed the work efficiently and as quickly as possible, he also listened to us sympathetically and provided us with another great example of Newfoundland hospitality. We were robbed, inconvenienced, and out of pocket and yet we will always remember the efforts of Steve and Sean. Both did their best to ensure that we had fond memories of Newfoundland and that we didn't let the actions of some unknown thieves ruin our vacation. We want to thank Steve SO much. He is a great ambassador for St. John's."
